Introduction
Would you agree that at the core of every human being lies an unquenchable desire to add meaning and value to this world? We all live with hopes of making an impact in some way. But why do you think we are wired with this deep longing for a purpose-driven life?
This desire stems from the very reason we were created.
Let me ask you a critical question—one that you may not have the answer to just yet, but one that I hope will bring clarity as we journey through this topic together: Why do you believe God created you?
Some common responses might be:
- “Because God wanted a family.”
- “God created us to worship Him.”
While these statements reflect the impact of being created, they don’t fully explain why we were created. Because God created us, we naturally become part of His family. Because we exist, we desire to worship and adore Him. However, the fundamental reason for our existence is this:
We were created to represent the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.
This truth is often overshadowed by religious traditions that teach we are simply here to try and live holy lives in order to secure a place in Heaven. But Jesus made it clear:
“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10, NIV)
If you believe your time on Earth is solely about making it to Heaven one day, then you are missing out on the abundant life Jesus sacrificed Himself to give you.
So, how do we live a purpose-driven life?
1. Only You Can Fulfill the Purpose God Created You For
Human behavior is largely influenced by external factors—especially the opinions and reactions of others. Whether we admit it or not, people’s responses shape how we view ourselves.
For example, imagine sharing a story you’re passionate about, only to receive an uninterested response like, “Oh, that’s cool.” Suddenly, you might think, “Maybe I’m not interesting enough. Maybe I should keep my thoughts to myself.”
However, people’s reactions do not define who you are. The only true perspective that matters is God’s.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” (Jeremiah 1:5, NIV)
Many people spend their lives adjusting themselves to meet the expectations of others. This is exhausting and ultimately unfulfilling. When you align yourself with God’s perspective, your approach to life changes. You realize that you were made to make a difference.
How dull would it be if every person were created with the same skills to do the same tasks? You are unique for a reason!
In the world’s eyes, you may seem replaceable, but in God’s eyes, you are irreplaceable.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8, NIV)
From the very beginning, God created you in His image (Genesis 1:27) to rule with authority, to bring His Kingdom to Earth, and to speak life into the world around you. That is why all creation eagerly awaits the revealing of God’s children (Romans 8:19).
2. You Are the Salt and Light of the Earth
Living from God’s perspective means you are not swayed by worldly opinions and standards. Jesus described His followers as salt and light:
“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:13-14, NIV)
What does this mean?
- Like salt, you preserve righteousness and add flavor to the world when you boldly stand on God’s Word. Your faith and integrity can bring hope to otherwise hopeless situations.
- Like light, you expose darkness, corruption, and deception. Through you, Jesus’ light shines into the world, revealing truth and transforming lives.
The key to living a purpose-driven life is realizing that you are already who God created you to be. There is no secret formula or 30-day plan—you are already equipped for your calling!
When you understand and accept this truth, you begin to live differently. You live boldly, free from fear of others’ opinions, because you know who you are in Christ.
“Lions don’t lose sleep over the opinions of sheep.”
God has already declared it: You are the salt and light of the Earth. You are a city on a hill that cannot be hidden.
Conclusion
Your best life is right now. Don’t be deceived into believing that you will start truly living one day—your time is now.
God knew the exact moment in history when your existence would make the greatest impact. That means nobody else can fulfill your role but you! How amazing is that?
To live purposefully, you must:
- Spend time with God—seeking Him daily in prayer and His Word.
- Surround yourself with like-minded believers—for “iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17).
- Live boldly in your identity in Christ—knowing that you were made in His image (Genesis 1:27).
- Take authority—proclaiming God’s truth over every area of your life.
- Love radically—because Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35, NIV)
“The measure you use will be measured to you.” (Matthew 7:2, NIV)
You are not here by chance. You are here to represent the Kingdom of Heaven. As you walk in your God-given purpose, people will look at your life and see the reflection of Jesus.
Be blessed,
Barry
